To achieve the unit, you are required to complete all the tasks. You must ensure that you achieve the learning outcomes and meet the standards which are stated in all the assessment criteria for this unit. You must clearly indicate each assessment criteria you have answered
Context
You should carry out the tasks in the context of a specific health or social care setting. This setting may be related to your current job role, a role you aspire to or one specified by your tutor. Example contexts include:
- Organisations providing health care e.g. NHS sector (Hospital wards, Mental Health Secure Units, Nursing Homes, Community Care etc
- Organisations providing social care e.g. care homes, supported housing
Task 1-This task covers assessment criteria (AC 1.1, 1.2, M1, M2, D3).
You are working in a health & social care sector as a senior staff and your line manager has asked you to prepare briefing sheet or presentation style information which will be used in the organisation’s induction programme for new staff.
You should research and document the following and prepare a presentation for your line manager that:
Explain why particular individuals and groups may be vulnerable to abuse and/or harm to self and others. Identify and apply strategies to find appropriate solutions to safeguarding
Conduct a review of the risk factors which may lead to incidence of abuse and/or harm to self and others. Select/design and apply appropriate methods/techniques to safeguarding
Demonstrate convergent/lateral/creative thinking in identifying and finding solutions to a safeguarding issue
Task 2-This task covers assessment criteria 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, D1)
Analyse the impact of social and cultural factors on different types of abuse and/or harm to self and others
Analyse the strengths and weaknesses in current legislation and policy relating to those vulnerable to abuse
Explain how key professionals are involved in the protection of individuals and groups vulnerable to abuse. Use critical reflection to evaluate own work and justify valid conclusions on a related safeguarding issue.
Task 3- This task covers assessment criteria AC 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3, M3, D2).
Explain existing working practices and strategies designed to minimise abuse in health and social care contexts.
Present and communicate appropriate findings as a result of safeguarding issues
Evaluate the effectiveness of working practices and strategies used to minimise abuse in health and social care contexts
Discuss possible improvements to working practices and strategies to minimise abuse in health and social care contexts.

- Select/design and apply appropriate methods/techniques to safeguarding
- Present and communicate appropriate findings by demonstrating that an appropriate structure and approach has been made in the production of a PowerPoint Presentation exploring safeguarding in different health and social care settings in the time frame given to complete the assignment.
To achieve a DISTINCTION grade:

1 Understand the factors that contribute to the incidence of abuse and harm to self and others
Different types of abuse: physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, financial
Different types of self-harm: self-inflicted wounds, drugs and alcohol
Signs of abuse and self-harm: inappropriate bruising, burns, scalding, malnourishment, low self-esteem, emotional withdrawal, neglect, other risk factors
Individuals vulnerable to abuse: children, young people, people with learning disabilities, people with mental health issues, elderly people, people with dementia Individual factors: self-esteem, identity, gender, previous abuse, relationships, drug and alcohol abuse, type of family background, mental health issues, psychological basis of abuse
Contexts and relationships where abuse may occur: home, community, residential care, institutional care, relationships involving power, caring relationships, within the family, domestic violence
